F3 Dynamics and Tempo October 2016

This term the children in F3 have been learning about dynamics (loud and quiet) and tempo (fast and slow). We have been using different instruments and our voices to show different speeds and volumes. We used a washing line to hang out our ideas and decide upon our structure. EYFS - Under the Sea

Desford Colliery Brass Band Visit BIS

Desford Colliery Brass Band visited us here at BIS for a series of concerts. They played concerts for EYFS, AP1 and TX and all of them were phenomenal. Judging from the reaction of the audience, the children found this a wonderful and memorable experience. We hope they can come again soon!

F3 Sound Exploration

This term the children in F3 have been exploring different sounds. Recently they went off on a hunt around school, collecting and making sounds. Have a look at our videos, made using MadPad, of our sounds.

EYFS Summer Concert - Happy Sun High

On the 17th of June, the children from F1 to F3, between the age of 2 to 5 years old, performed songs about summer, beach days and delightful picnics. Their singing and dancing were absolutely fantastic!

The Early Years and Music department could not be any prouder of the Fundinos! Prior to the concert, the children prepared costumes, stage props and learnt ten songs to put this show together. We have witnessed the support of parents in singing with their children at home through their confidence in performing on stage. The class teachers and teaching assistants have also done brilliant jobs with their classes in preparation for the concert. The amount of time and creativity they put together is quite impressive.

Fuzzy Wuzzy by F3B

The children in F3B have been practising their skills in playing percussion instruments. This video features one of their great performances of a silly song called Fuzzy Wuzzy. Did we sing and play in time? :)

EYFS Musical Signals

Get Ready! Play! Stop! These are the visual cues that the children in F2 have been learning in Music. They have been following hand signals to play drums with their friends. The children particularly enjoy playing 'loud' and 'quiet'.

F3 Claves & Woodblocks

Claves and woodblocks are great instruments for foundation children to learn with tapping and hitting. This week, the lovely children in F3 have learnt to play these instruments. They had a go at playing claves and woodblocks in varying tempo and dynamics, which they did pretty well. They particularly enjoyed playing fast and loud. :)

FUN in Term One!

This term, the F3 children have been performing dance routines to a steady beat. We have also been enjoying the Stop Song, and making silly dances with it. Here we are having fun in our movement activities. :)

EYFS Music Celebration

The Early Years Foundation Stage had a concert last Wednesday, 11th of June 2014. It was a great event that showcased the children's progress in Music. This year's theme focused on their keen interest in animals, which was entitled Wild About Music. The Fundinos, from ages 2 to 5, performed on stage with singing, dancing, and playing percussion instruments. The performances displayed these young children's developing musical skills. They did such a wonderful job! The children were dressed as musical animals, wearing costumes that they themselves had created. They were proud of what they have made, and they looked fabulous! 

I would like to say a massive thank you to all the class teachers, assistants, and trainees, for  their effort and hard work before and during the event. Thank you also to the parents who watched the concert. The children worked hard during rehearsals, and have given their best on stage. Knowing they are so little, we are very proud of each of them.

F3 Music

An EYFS Masterpiece

On Wednesday last week, the EYFS children had their turn in the limelight.  Each class performed a musical item that was inspired by a famous piece of art or artist.  There was also an exhibition of artwork made by the children based on the original artwork that each class chose.  Have a look at the videos below to see how the children created their artwork and also have a look at the slideshow of photographs taken during the performance.  Good Job EYFS!

Parent Teacher Meetings

The Great Wave off Kanagawa - F3 Music

In F3 music sessions this week, we have been listening to "La Mer" by Claude Debussy and looking at some Japanese artwork called "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" by the painter Katsushika Hokusai.  As we listened to the music we closed our eyes and imagined what it would be like to be one of the people in the painting.  The F3 children suggested some really exciting ideas including "they are so scared," "they are scared that the water will come in the boat," and "the big wave is crashing so loudly."  We decided to listen to the music again and this time to try and act out the story with some of our friends being the people in the boat and some of us waving scarves to look like the ocean waves.  Have a look at the video below to see how much fun we had with classical music.

I Hear Thunder in F3

We looked carefully at this painting by Thomas Cole called "After a Thunderstorm."  As we thought about the painting we listened to "Summer (Presto) from the Four Seasons" by Vivaldi.  We were so inspired by the sights and sounds that we decided to make some thunder music of our own.  Have a listen to the recordings below and please leave us a comment on what you have heard.

Kandinsky's Circles in F3

This week in our music sessions we were inspired by the artwork of Kandinsky and the music of Finland.  We looked and the beautiful painted circles of Kandinsky's painting and then painted circles in our heads as we listened to the music.  Then we had a go at making circles on instruments and with floaty ribbons.  Whenever we heard a fast part in the music we sped up and whenever we heard slow music we slowed down.  We had to listen hard to the music to decide then the music changed and what we should be doing with our hands.  Have a look at our video and see for yourself.

Snake Dance

Chuc Mung Nam Moi 2013!

We performed a dance to celebrate the arrival of the year of the snake.  We used fancy ribbons on sticks to help us make snakey shapes as we moved.  The music is in two parts, the first part is slow, so we used big sweeping movements during this section to practise following the ribbon with our eyes and being aware of our own space.  The second part is fast and we used quick movements to represent the snake hissing through the grass.

Magical Musical Box

We have been learning a song about the Magical Musical box in our F2 music sessions recently.  The box is musical, because as we pass it round the circle is makes a sound which is a little bit like a mixture between a maraca, a jingle bell, a tambourine and a pair of finger cymbals.  The children have really enjoyed listening carefully and distinguishing the different instrumental sounds as we sing and play.  The box is also magical because when we play a special game we can make the box play music just by opening the lid!  To perform this kind of magic, each child in the class had to choose their own instrument to play and when Mr Euan opened the box at a certain point in the song, we all played together watching closely to see when the box would close again and tell us to stop playing.  You can hear what this sounded like by listening to these recordings of each class playing this game.

Elephants in F3

This week in our F3 music sessions we have been listening to "Elephants" from The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens.  The music is supposed to sound like elephants dancing, so that is just what we did.  We teamed up with a partner to make sure that we could give our elephant four legs and then we waltzed around the music room with big heavy stomping feet.  We are really enjoying our insights into classical music.

The Flight of the Bumble Bee

In F3 music sessions this week, we have been listening to "The Flight of the Bumble Bee" by Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov and looking at some Japanese artwork called "Chrysanthemums" by the painter Utagawa Hiroshige.  As we listened to the music we closed our eyes and imagined what the bumble bee might be doing.  The F3 children suggested some really exciting ideas including "he is collecting the special juice from the flowers," "he is buzzing from flower to flower," "sometimes he stings people," and "he flies away home at the end."  We decided to listen to the music again and this time to try and act out some bumble bee movements using our floaty scarves.  Have a look at how much fun we had with classical music.
