For the Year 6 Exhibition children have been working on using music notation. They were given a choice to either compose using notation or to perform using notation, under the theme of Journeys. Click on the link below to access our recordings.

Now That's What I Call Music!

AP1’s Summer Concert 2017 was, once again, truly an event to remember.  The concert was entitled “Now That’s What I Call Music!” and it most certainly lived up to the name. The show featured fabulous performances from all of our AP1 choirs and instrumental ensembles who have been working hard throughout the year. Our fantastic young AP1 musicians had the audience clapping along and smiling throughout. Particular highlights were the MP1 Choir performing “Let’s Dance”, the School of Rock giving a rousing rendition of “I Will Survive”, the Harmony Choir making great use of their fabulous voices with a multitude of solos in “Sing” and, finally, the amazing sound we achieved with all of the children singing and playing together for our finale “I Want to Hold Your Hand”.  

Now that is what I really call music!

Thank-you to all of those Year 6 children who recently auditioned for a solo part in the upcoming Leavers Assembly. This was an incredibly brave thing to do, singing in front of your friends and peers, and all of you should feel very proud.

FOBISIA Youth Choir ‘Joy of Song’ Concert Thursday 18th and Friday 19th May

Mr Jon, our fabulous Music Teacher at TX Campus, has written all about our amazing FOBISIA Youth Choir. Have a look below at his congratulatory words and our amazing video. Well done everyone.

The newly formed FOBISIA Youth Choir of Ho Chi Minh City comprising 60 students from ABC International School, BVIS and BIS have been rehearsing hard for months in preparation for their first ever concert. They performed with the International Choir and Orchestra of Ho Chi Minh City as well as singing 3 songs on their own. The concerts also featured the Asian premiere of Zimbe! – a fusion of traditional African songs and jazz.

The hard work and dedication of 60 students from ABCIS, BVIS and BIS – the newly formed FOBISIA Youth Choir of Ho Chi Minh City -  was rewarded with 2 stunning concert at Soul Academy on Thursday and Friday night last week. Along with musicians and singers from the International Choir and Orchestra of Ho Chi Minh City the youth choir dazzled the audience with their wonderful singing, bright T-shirts and huge smiles.

28 BIS children from AP1, TX and AP2 along with students from BVIS and ABCIS joined forces to form the FOBISIA Youth Choir of Ho Chi Minh City. They have been rehearsing hard for months and have enjoyed the opportunity to sing with, and get to know, each other. Their debut concerts were on Thursday 18^th and Friday 19^th May as they performed in the ‘Joy of Song’ Concerts at Soul Academy with the International Choir and Orchestra of Ho Chi Minh City.

To an audience of family and friends the children sang a Gospel medley in three parts then were accompanied by the orchestra to sing ‘This Is Our World’ and the live premiere of ‘Free As A Bird’. Wearing their special FOBISIA Zimbe! T-shirts they not only looked the part but sounded amazing too. In the second half of the concert they were joined by the adult choir and a jazz quintet to perform the Asian premiere of Zimbe! – a fusion of traditional African songs and jazz. The combined efforts of children and adults had the audience in Soul’s hall tapping their feet and clapping to the infectious rhythms and it was a truly spectacular sound.

The music teams of BIS, BVIS and ABCIS are all very proud of you – a massive Well Done!

FOBISIA Youth Choir - First Rehearsal

Today was the first time that the three HCMC FOBISIA schools came together, ready for our upcoming concert of Zimbe!. Well-done to all of our singers who are involved.

MP2 Live Lunch

We had a very successful two days of MP2 Live Lunches, with dozens of performers showcasing their musical skills this Tuesday and Wednesday. We had all kinds of instruments, such as the ukulele, flute, drums, cello, and clarinet, to name just a few!

We hope everyone enjoyed themselves, performers and audience members alike and the Music department is very proud of how brave you all were and what good support you showed each other during the concerts. Well done!

WHATEVER THE WEATHER - AN ATMOSPHERIC JOURNEY

This year’s whole school Spring Spectacular was a fantastic showcase for the talents of BIS students from all three campuses, with every one of the concert items featuring the common theme of the weather. AP1 and TX opened the show in style with a rousing joint performance of ‘Mr Blue Sky”. This was followed with a set from the AP1 campus, featuring such songs as “California Dreaming” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.

TX opened the second half of the concert and definite highlights from this were “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. The remainder of the concert was filled with fabulous items from a range of AP2 ensembles. The Chamber Choir’s rendition of “The Storm is Passing Over” was delightful and the Concert Band’s “Snow Day Celebration” really started the audience’s toes tapping! AP2 rounded off their set with a dazzling orchestral and vocal performance of “Another Day of Sun” from the recent movie “La La Land”.

To end the evening, all three campuses joined together for an incredible finale of “It’s Raining Sunshine”. This performance really raised the roof! Once again the BIS Music department has been astounded at the sheer talent and hard work from all of our students which contributed to such a magnificent event. Well done everyone!

MP2 Live Lunch

Sign-up sheets are now up on Ms Fran's and Ms Beth's doors for the MP2 Live Lunches on Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th March. This is open to any Year 3 or Year 4 student wishing to perform.

Parade of Nations

Our MP2 and MP3 Choirs performed spectacularly at the two Parades of Nations this morning. We are very proud of them for opening the Parades with their two songs, which you can listen to here, along with their song from the Opening Ceremony on Monday. It was a great way to start the final day of International Week at AP1.

International Week Begins!

A Christmas Cracker!

Well done to all those children who helped to make our AP1 Carol Concert a massive success. All of the performances were tremendous and the Music Teachers are all very proud of you!

MP3 Live Lunches

A huge well done to all the Year 5 and Year 6 children who performed in the Live Lunches on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. We were really happy to have such a variety of performers and everybody did so well to perform their pieces so brilliantly. We were lucky to hear music from the piano, guitar, violin, and voice, as well as an original composition.

A big thank you also goes to our audience members on both days - you all demonstrated what respectful listeners you all are and we were especially pleased with how many of you turned up to listen to your friends perform.

AP1 Feels The Rhythm

All of our young musicians from F1 to Year 4 were this week given the opportunity to learn more about the importance of percussion instruments throughout the world within different cultures. Firstly, the EYFS children watched an assembly in which Andy’s “Shoebox Orchestra”, featuring tiny instruments from all over the globe, took them on a journey around the world.

All classes from Year 1 – 3 were given the opportunity to spend a half-hour session with Andy, learning about how music is embedded in everyday life in Africa and using the d’jembes to create their own African drumming performances. Years 3 and 4 investigated the origins of Brazilian music and performed their own catchy carnival rhythms in a Samba band.

Finally, it was the turn of the adults to show their musical prowess during an African drumming workshop. Together the parents explored mono- and poly-rhythms and managed to perform some very complex rhythmic material based on rhythms borrowed from the Royal Drummers of Burundi.

Some very exciting drumming workshops and some extremely sore hands!

Young Musician of the Year Final 2016

On the evening of Thursday 27 October, 2016, musicians from BVIS Primary and BIS Primary (Tu Xuong Campus and An Phu Campus) came together for the annual Primary Young Musician of the Year Competition. The event was held at the BIS An Phu Secondary Campus with judges from both BIS and BVIS to oversee the proceedings. Our judges, Mrs Emma Husband, Mr Ian Alexander and Mr Mat Williams, had a challenging proposition put to them - who would be this year's winner? 

The young musicians played pieces from Russia, Finland, South Korea and other parts of the world by famous composers such as Bach, Schubert and Clementi. We heard performances on the piano, the violin, guitar and cello and were wowed by such wonderful musical story-telling. The audience was given a magical, musical and memorable treat!  

Huge congratulations to all of our finalists who fought off stiff competition in the first round auditions and the Semi-final challenges to win a space in the Final. A big thank-you to teachers, parents and instrumental teachers for their support of our young musicians during this process. The finalists were: Sushi Le (piano); Chae Rim Lee (piano); Ha Trung Doan (piano); Jessica Hwang (piano); Tae Wan Oh (violin); Dolly Nguyen (piano); Minh Phuong (Puppy) Tang (piano); Anya Chakrabarty (violin); Johnny Nguyen (guitar); Jae Jung (piano); Chan Yun Park (piano); and Katie Lim (cello).  

I, along with all of the Music Teams from BIS and BVIS, am very proud to announce the winners of the Young Musician of the Year Competition 2016 as: Anya Chakrabarty (first place); Chae Rim Lee (second place); and Chan Yun Park (third place). Well done to everyone who took part and a huge thank-you for everyone who helped make this event such a success. I look forward to seeing the magic continue next year and to seeing these young musicians continue to grow in their musical confidence.

CENTENARY OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME

In a few weeks, we will be having a special assembly commemorating 100 years since the Battle of the Somme during World War 1.  To honour the memory of those who gave their lives in battle, we will be singing the famous hymn by Gustav Holst "I Vow To Thee My Country".

Year 5 children will recognise the melody of this hymn from "Jupiter" when we were studying "The Planets Suite" also by Holst.

Many of you will also recognise the melody form International Week.  It was used as the basid for "World in Union" which we play every year during the flag ceremony.
