Hector Berlioz (1803 - 1869)
French Composer
Berlioz has written many pieces of music, including lots for singers. He had a great imagination and often combined lots of sounds to create a more expressive piece. He even planned for an orchestra to have over 400 performers!

- Hector heard some girls singing when he was 11 and he loved it so much that music became an important part of his life from that day on.
- Hector began composing music with his friends.
- He preferred to compose music for large orchestras (called symphonies) and for lots of singers (called opera)
- He wrote a book on how orchestra music should be written called 'Treatise of Instrumentation and Orchestration.
This video is of the 3rd Movement from Harold in Italy. Berlioz didn't number his compositions like other composers but named them instead to help his listeners focus on their imaginations.
Click on the link below to see the March to the Scaffold from Symphonie Fantastique. In this movement Berlioz was telling the story of a man who is having dreams about marching. Lots of people say this music sounds like Star Wars.
