For the month of May, our Musician of the Month is Antonio Vivaldi. As one of the greatest Baroque composers of the 17th century, Vivaldi's compositions influenced classical music throughout Europe. His most memorable concertos are The Four Seasons and the Opus 3.
Antonio Vivaldi was born in Venice, Italy. His father, Giovanni Battista Vivaldi, was a professional violinist who taught him to play the violin. Antonio became a priest and continued to play the violin. He was called the 'Red Priest' because of his red hair. However, he had asthma which kept him from saying Mass.
Vivaldi then spent all his time writing music and teaching. He taught at an orphanage for girls and wrote music for them. Many people came from different parts of Europe to hear Vivaldi's talented students perform the beautiful music he had written.
Vivaldi wrote concertos, operas, church music and many other compositions - over 500 concertos and the most famous one 'The Four Seasons'.
