Musician of the Month: Daft Punk!

This month's musician is Daft Punk! Daft Punk is not just one musician though - they are an electronic music duo (two people). These guys don't want to be famous so they wear helmets. This is because sometimes being famous is difficult and you can't go back to being an ordinary person after. They have not allowed photographs of their face to be taken since May 1996! The helmets they wear are very high-tech now and cost $65,000, which is a lot more money than their first helmets in the 90's. When they first started out as a music group they wore simple and dinky Halloween costume helmets.

One of their most famous songs is 'Get Lucky', featuring Pharrell Williams. This song has sold over 7 million copies world wide and has won them 3 GRAMMYS in 2014! Here is the video for it:

Daft Punk may seem like a very recent band on the music scene, but they have been around since 1993. That's before you were born! Ask your parents or your older brother or sister if they recognise this song that came out in 1997. Let us know if they do in the comment section!

However, before Daft Punk even formed, the two musicians (Guy-Manuel and Thomas) were part of another band of three called 'Darlin'. The third member was called Laurent. The band split in 1993 and Laurent went to form another band called Phoenix with his brother, Christian. However, Guy-Manuel and Thomas still continued making music. They are all still close friends though. Later, Guy-Manuel and Thomas were reviewed by music magazine Melody Maker, who called their music 'a daft punky thrash'. They liked the sound of this and then called themselves Daft Punk from then on! Here is a track from a music compilation cassette of theirs called 'Untitled 18'. Here, you can hear where the sound of Daft Punk came from. Can anyone comment on what you can hear in the song that sounds similar to Daft Punk's music?
